Przedmiotem opisu jest osiem współczesnych, tzn. powstałych w drugiej połowie XX i na początku XXI wieku, książek (powieści i zbiorów opowiadań), których akcja rozgrywa się na wybranych wyspach wschodniego wybrzeża Adriatyku. Autorka dokonuje oglądu wysp, stosując metodę badania symbolu, którą w tekście Symbol daje do myślenia z tomu Egzystencja i hermeneutyka zaproponował Paul Ricoeur. Podążając za ideą filozofa, wskazuje cztery symbole – pustynię, więzienie, teatr świata i ogród – poprzez które usiłuje przybliżyć symbol podstawowy. Każdy z tematów opracowuje na podstawie dwóch różnych książek, zarysowując dwie odmienne interpretacje pojęcia oraz odkrywając, z jakimi ludzkimi doświadczeniami wiąże się funkcjonowanie konkretnego obrazu.; This book is devoted to the study of meanings and functions of the island in contemporary Croatian insular fiction. It is also an attempt to encourage the rejection of simplistic, trivial, strictly tourist representation of the country. The study focuses on eight contemporary works of fiction (seven novels and one collection of short stories written between the 1950s and 2000s) set on the islands off the eastern coast of the Adriatic. They are analysed applying Paul Ricoeur’s method of exploring the symbol, as proposed in “The Symbol Gives Rise to Thought”, the concluding chapter of his volume The Symbolism of Evil. Following his idea, the author of this study indicates four symbols: the desert, the prison, the theatrum mundi and the garden, by means of which she tries to approach the main symbol: the island. She elaborates on each of them on the basis of two different books, proposing two diverse interpretations of the notion in focus and uncovering attendant human experience they convey. Wybrane zagadnienia Dobrzyńska, Dorota Tematem monografii jest wpływ tzw. czarnego romantyzmu na współczesną literaturę popularną: polską, jak również zagraniczną. Inspiracją do przeprowadzenia takiej analizy są poglądy niektórych badaczy, twierdzących, że romantyzm w Polsce wymaga reinterpretacji, przez lata był bowiem kojarzony głównie z hasłami narodowowyzwoleńczymi i wieloma stereotypami. Obecnie coraz częściej postrzega się go jednak jako zjawisko estetyczno-filozoficzne, rzadziej niż w przeszłości łącząc go z kwestiami historiozoficznymi czy politycznymi. To z kolei pozwala traktować romantyzm nie tylko jako zakończoną epokę w historii literatury i sztuki, ale również jako specyficzny styl, obecny także we współczesnych utworach. Przydatne jest tu pojęcie czarnego romantyzmu, nurtu w literaturze i sztuce (głównie amerykańskiej i zachodnioeuropejskiej), którego cechy to: mroczna atmosfera dzieł, tajemniczy bohaterowie odkrywający sekrety egzystencji, motywy śmierci, melancholii i szaleństwa, nawiązania do baśni i ludowości. Współcześnie elementy czarnego romantyzmu często pojawiają się w literaturze i kulturze popularnej, co oznacza, że – interpretowany w kategoriach stylu – pozostaje on aktualny. Celem monografii jest zbadanie, w jaki sposób wątki i motywy charakterystyczne dla czarnego romantyzmu funkcjonują we współczesnej literaturze popularnej, polskiej i europejskiej. Analizowane przykłady to: młodzieżowe powieści Carlosa Ruiza Zafóna; opowiadanie Fredericka Forsytha „Szepczący Wiatr” i powieść Krzysztofa Kotowskiego „Krew na placu Lalek”; polska literatura fantasy – cykle opowiadań Andrzeja Sapkowskiego („Ostatnie życzenie”, „Miecz przeznaczenia”) i Anny Kańtoch („Diabeł na wieży”, „Zabawki diabła”); powieści kryminalne nawiązujące do estetyki czarnego romantyzmu – „Sherlock Holmes i mądrość umarłych” Rodolfa Martíneza oraz „Jul” Pawła Goźlińskiego. Analizy te dowodzą, że elementy czarnego romantyzmu są obecne we współczesnej literaturze popularnej, także w Polsce, co oznacza, iż może nastąpić zmiana w polskim postrzeganiu romantyzmu. Potrzebne wydają się więc dalsze badania recepcji czarnego romantyzmu w literaturze współczesnej (jak i XIX-wiecznej), gdyż mogłyby ukazać polski romantyzm w całkowicie nowym świetle.; This book discusses the influence of so-called Dark Romanticism on contemporary popular literature, foreign as well as Polish. Its starting point is the opinion, voiced by some Polish scholars, that in today’s Poland, there is a need for a reinterpretation of Romanticism. Over the years, it was associated mainly with patriotic issues and with many stereotypes. Nowadays, however, it has been increasingly treated as an aesthetic phenomenon rather than connected with political and historiosophical questions. This change also makes it possible to consider Romanticism not only as a closed period in the history of literature and art but also as a style still present in literary works. Useful here is the concept of Dark Romanticism, a literary and art movement (mainly American and West European), whose features include: gloomy atmosphere, mysterious characters who unveil the secrets of their existence, motifs connected with death, melancholy and insanity, and references to folklore and fairy tales. In the recent years, elements of Dark Romanticism have been appearing in popular literature and culture, which means that – interpreted as a style – it still remains valid. The book’s aim is to analyse how motifs characteristic of Dark Romanticism function in contemporary popular literature, Polish and European. The discussed examples are: the “young adult” novels of Carlos Ruiz Zafón; the short story “Whispering Wind” by Frederick Forsyth and the novel “Krew na placu Lalek” [Blood on Dolls Square] by Krzysztof Kotowski; Polish fantasy literature – the cycles of short stories by Andrzej Sapkowski (“Ostatnie życzenie” [The Last Wish], “Miecz przeznaczenia” [The Sword of Destiny]) and Anna Kańtoch (“Diabeł na wieży” [The Devil on the Tower], “Zabawki diabła” [Devil’s Toys]); and crime fiction referring to the aesthetics of Dark Romanticism – “The Wisdom of the Dead” by Rodolfo Martínez and “Jul” by Paweł Goźliński. The analyses prove that elements of Dark Romanticism are present in contemporary popular literature, which seems to be especially significant in Poland, where the attitude towards Romanticism has recently been changing. It is also claimed that not only should the reception of Dark Romanticism in contemporary literature be further analysed but it is likewise important to pay more attention to the problem of Polish reception of Dark Romanticism in the nineteenth century, as this may render novel interpretations of some works that could shed a new light on Polish Romanticism.
