Abstract

Soul according to Luter This article will be an anthropological-linguistic reflection about a question of souls in the writings of Martin Luther, which refers to the concept of Bernard Clairvaux (his interpretation of marriage of the Bride and the Groom from the Songs of Solomon) as well as the theology of mercy and the salvation of the soul according to the teachings of St. Augustine. Martin Luter’s understanding the mystical unification (unio mystica) of Christ (the Groom) and the human soul (the Bride) is rooted in the theological mystics before the scholastic period. Luther’s rejection of the idea of purgatory (Schmalkaldische Artikel) as a place where souls find themselves after death is linked to St. Augustine’s doctrine of grace.
