dc.description.abstract This article studies linguistic means of the specific character of metaphors representing the concept of SIN in the Ukrainian linguistic world. The role of the area of SUBSTANCE as a source of metaphorical concept of SIN is described. Features of each type of substance, its prototypical aspects are considered; the grounds for the comparison of the given substances with sin are established. The research is based on the analysis of texts in the Ukrainian phraseology, proverbs, XX–XXI century prose. The metaphorical model SIN – SUBSTANCE is represented by six frames – MUD, FOOD, WATER, SMELL, RADIATION, BLOOD. Metaphorization is based on prototypical properties of these substances – uselessness, physiological need, taste qualities, health damage, danger, colour. Most metaphors have evaluation. en
