Abstract:
The paper shows current tendencies of word-formation in scientific style of Modern Ukrainian: the increase of borrowings, internationalization of terminological word stock, competition of native and loan elements as a mechanism of opposition to xenization of lexicons to preserve language identity. The article reveals language intellectualization, the role of abstract nouns in categorization of lexis, forming of new groups of words: composite- and juxtaposite groups, families of nominations. It also describes the role of affixation in terminology formation, the increase of mostly borrowed root affixes – stems with repeated and unified meanings, also periphrastic word-formation as a mechanism of split in form and single in the sense nominations derivation. Both attest to the fact of the increase of analytical forms in the language. The analyzed terminological systems in Ukrainian (biological, IT, social and political) witness xenization of their elements, among which English borrowing prevail. This language is not only the source of borrowings, but also an intermediary. Many terms in it are built from Greek and English material, which do not lose their ground and remain the source of numerous internationalisms. The processes of terminologization and determinologization are stimulated by migration of terms from one functional style to another. This adds to the increase of the level of intellectualization of the language and manifests itself in the increase of proportion of abstract lexis and compound words. On the level of language system due to this the following tendencies are observed: intensification of language analytism, trend towards economy of language efforts owing to the condensation of semantics, formation of split nominations (semantic unities with the split from) and their further condensation in juxtaposites, composites and abbreviations, and also the acquisition by multiple stems of the status of root affixes, which are united in composite- and juxtaposite families of nominations.
