Abstract:
Friendly relationships between Ukraine and Poland in all spheres of social life are stipulated by the preparation for its entry to the European Union. This is why there exists an urgent need to supply these relationships with adequate linguistic service. To train professional translators and provide their successful activity, there should exist quality dictionaries. Contemporary explanatory dictionaries are rather outdated and do not cover new lexis and phraseology, while bilingual explanatory and translatory Ukrainian-Polish dictionaries of idioms do not exist at all.
The analysis of the scientific-and-critical literature (reviews, revision of new lexicographical production) as well as of the discourse of the actual dictionaries discovered both advantages and some methodological disadvantages of lexicographical practice. Ukrainian-Polish and Polish-Ukrainian paramiography has been significantly widened in the result of recording the equivalents of words – a special type of linguistic units which take up an intermediate place within the system of idioms, word combinations and words, idiomatic, occasional and individual similes, interlingual onyms and paronyms, which cause difficulties in the process of Ukrainians and Poles speaking, as well as modern and old, general and regional proverbs and sayings, sporadic proverbial signs and wellerisms picked out from Polish and Ukrainian sources. Authors’ concepts of new dictionaries deserve attention as they represent a multiple approach to characterizing linguistic units, represent their pragmatic functions, illustrate their usage in modern speech.
However, it happens that sometimes dictionary compilers defy basic principles of lexicographic activity. These are the cases of lexicographers aiming at recording occasional units rather than fixed linguistic facts, discrepancies in explaining polysemantic units or even no recording of some aspects of their meaning, inconsistency in the criteria of the linguistic material selection of registered units with their variants taken into account etc. All this considered, the theory and practice of Ukrainian-Polish paramiography needs new research efforts, first and foremost among them being a modern original concept of an up-to-date Ukrainian-Polish and Polish-Ukrainian dictionary of idioms or a dictionary of fixed expressions, which would correspond to the modern level of the paramiography development, and interpretative and pragmatic-oriented advances in philology with the existing tradition in the background.
