Abstract:
The article describes how specific ways of non-suffix word formation in the sociolect of Ukrainian fans help to receive language economy. This research is an attempt to fill the gap in the linguistics studies of the fans sociolect and to find out the examples of truncated words in the speech of Ukrainian football fans and to define the lexical meaning of these nominations and show their functioning in the context. The truncation of the word in modern Ukrainian language is done by rejection of a certain part of a word. Apocope isone of the most widely spread ways of lexical abbreviation of words. It is defined as non-affix word formation meaning truncation of the end of formation stem or word according to abbreviation example. Apocope is characteristic only for nouns and spoken language. Apocope does not change the lexical meaning of the word but the word becomes hardly recognised due to specific reduction. In the football fans sociolect apocope abbreviations are found in the words with different number of syllables (mainly from three-syllable to five-syllable) whereas the new-formed words have one syllable as a rule (dvizh, zlyv, makh, nik, perf, stad, strob, trans, traf) or two syllables (vocal, vrotslav, zamis, kryvi, perform, roztiah, khuly, shyza). Apocope formed fans speech nominations are rather numerous in the sociolect. Besides laconism they attract attention because of their expressive inspiration.
