dc.description.abstract The paper deals with the nouns used to denote persons based on their belonging to a specific inhabited location, with regard to their description in voluminous monolingual dictionaries of Bulgarian and Czech languages. The problem considered is whether masculine nouns in the singular refer to persons marked ‘male’ or persons unmarked by sex. It is concluded that masculine nouns in both languages express two meanings to be reflected in lexicographic definitions consistently – a general one (‘a person unmarked by sex’) and a narrower one (‘a male’). en_US
