Abstract:
The paper discusses the basic terms referring to the subject-matter of phraseology by considering their content and use. It demonstrates the difference between the phraseological unit and other types of set phrases and thus argues for the need and the real possibility of introducing a strictly differentiated use of the familiar terms by restricting the application of those containing the element phras-/phraseo- only to phraseological units. The term collocations is introduced as a reference to the several groups of typical expressions which represent a substantial part of any language but fall outside the large structural semantic systems with distinctive typology (proverbs, comparisons, etc.). The paper proposes a differentiated use of the terms idiomatics and phraseology.
