Abstract:
Due to their incontestable and widely recognised specificity, phraseological units are known to cause significant difficulty in translation. Even the phraseological units with the same denotative meaning might have different connotations creating a unique colouring which is important but sometimes impossible to render by the means of another language. This was the problem many participants of the “Translation Contest 2012” failed to resolve. The article analyses why the contestants misunderstood these language units and it studies the mistakes made in translating them into Russian.
