dc.description.abstract The following text throws light on the work of some Bulgarian teachers during the years just before and immediately after the Liberation. Those professionals up-dated and modernized the educational system of the period before the Russian-Turkish War of 1877 - 78. The teachers were also active participants in the social life of the Bulgarians at the time. They were contemporaries of Nestor Markov, being his colleagues, proselytes and friends. After the Liberation, most of them played important roles in the process of building up the young Bulgarian state as senior officials, scientists and active participants in public matters. en_US
