Abstract:
The article considers the possibility of distinguishing between the phenomenon of universality (condensation, compression) and metonymy as a type of name transfer. On the basis of the previously stated thesis that almost any word represents repetition and often replaces the phrase, the author of this article argues that the universality as a way of forming words does not constitute a specific phenomenon. The article also deals with actant metonymy - the direction from actant to action, illustrating some common types of semantic compression.
