Abstract:
PSl *о^сь (< *ot-Ik-os) was built with a suffix *-ik- probably having a diminutive sense (‘little father, daddy’); but *-ik- may be an adjectivizing suffix (cf. French colloquial mon paternel ‘my father’). If PSl *sъlnьcе ‘sun’ is supposedly from *sulmko-, with a diminutive suffix *-ik-/-ik-, it may be analogous to the origin of French soleil ‘sun’ - but diminutiveness is semantically more than problematic, even in diachrony. Other Slavic-Romance diachronical derivational matches are to be analyzed, some of them being semantically rather complex, cf. PSl *oko, R oko ‘eye’ compared to their diminutives, Russian očko in their different meanings (< in diachrony ‘little eye’), R očki ‘optical glasses’: the latter is similar to Fr lunettes, a diminutive in diachrony (< lune ‘moon’).
